Preserving the Veluwe Forests

Balsam & Co. was founded with a simple vision: to bring the health benefits of the Dutch forests into the homes of urban dwellers. Every piece of pine we use is harvested under strict ecological guidelines from certified forests in Gelderland and Utrecht.

For every furniture order, we fund the planting of three Scots Pine saplings in partnering nature conservation projects in the Netherlands, ensuring that we give back far more than we take.

Design Principles

The Three Pillars of Biophilic Living

Our design decisions are guided by scientifically proven principles that reconnect humans with nature.

1. Material Authenticity

We work exclusively with solid pine and oak timber. We preserve knots, cracks, and raw edges to honor the living character of the wood and maintain tactile connection.

2. Plant Co-Existence

Our furniture features integrated spaces designed for live indoor plants. This synergy naturally improves indoor air quality, raises oxygen levels, and stabilizes ambient humidity.

3. Sensory Wellness

Unvarnished Scots pine releases natural terpenes, creating a soothing woodland scent. Research shows exposure to these biophilic compounds lowers blood pressure and heart rate.

Precision & Soul

Every Balsam & Co. creation is hand-machined and finished in our Amsterdam workshop. Our carpenters use traditional mortise and tenon joinery techniques that require no metallic hardware, allowing the wood to naturally expand and contract with the changing seasons without cracking.

We embrace small-scale local fabrication over massive manufacturing lines. This means your item is uniquely yours, personally signed by the artisan who built it.
